The ranking is based on an analysis of various aspects of the activities of marketing directors, including their activity, reputation in the media and influence in the global marketing community. More than 500 brands from the Brand Finance 2016 and Forbes Most Valuable Brands List 2016 lists were considered.
The top positions went to Antonio Lucio of HP Inc, Phil Schiller of Apple, Linda Boff of GE, Leslie Berland of Twitter, Mark Mathew of Samsung Electronics America and Muse Tariq of Ford. It is noted that about a third of the directors represented in the rating are women.
Most of the participants have been in the top positions for about five years. Influential CMOs either move on to new roles within the company or take up CMO positions at other larger brands. Participants from the technology, telecoms and internet sectors dominate the list.

Key findings from the report:
Top CMOs are very active in social media. 45 out of 50 TOP CMOs have Twitter accounts. 49 out of 50 have LinkedIn accounts. They are also more active in social media. Having 2x more interactions than other CMOs from large companies on LinkedIn and 2.5x more followers on Twitter.
Technology, telecommunications and internet companies dominate the ranking. Together, these industries generate about 40% of the list. Financial companies are in second place.
