What are semantic tags and structured data good for anyway?

Okay, we're in 2018! Do we really still need to talk about this? Okay. Structured data is no longer a nice-to-have accessory you should add someday. No. Structured data and semantic markup are now a basic level of any good website! I'd even go so far as to say that a good basic structure and at least some basic semantic markup should be the bare minimum—having them doesn't give you an advantage—but if you don't have them, it probably means you're not serious about SEO.

Ensuring your website has at least descriptive and concise title tags is—no one would cameroon phone number data dispute it—semantic 1×1 these days. However, I wish semantic markup and structured data were added to this checklist, because they are so incredibly fundamental!

Why?

Well, SEO is largely about avoiding ambiguity. It's about being specific. Because in the SEO world, specificity beats generality every time! It sounds like a piece of wisdom, but it really just means SEO. Because with SEO, we want to make sure nothing gets lost in the translation between the website experience we want to create and the search engine application that was programmed to capture and index precisely this content on our website!

When you make well-structured semantic markup and data available to search engines (and other web applications), you ensure that they can accurately identify what your website's content is and what it's about. Who wouldn't want that level of control and clarity?
