Health insurance companies have been covering the costs of online consultations since April 2017. In May 2018, the German Medical Association paved the way for patients to be able to receive treatment via video chat without a prior personal visit to the doctor - if this is medically justifiable and the necessary medical care is maintained.
14 out of 16 federal states have now adapted self employed database their medical professional code accordingly. During online consultations, doctors and patients communicate via a certified video service provider who ensures a secure technical process. In addition to an internet connection, a webcam, speakers and a microphone are required - technical equipment that is already included as standard in tablets and smartphones.
“It would be consistent to bring forward the already planned introduction of the e-prescription and to implement it quickly in order to provide the best possible care for patients,” emphasises Berg.
At the same time, a large proportion of German citizens have great confidence in the potential of digitalization in combating the coronavirus and curing sick people. 84 percent say that digital technologies can help learn more about the coronavirus and find an antidote, for example through the automated analysis of patient data.
