Knowledge of languages is a key aspect in finding a job. This is demonstrated by the fact that 33.4% of job offers published in our country include among their requirements that candidates have knowledge of one or more languages, according to the VII Infoempleo Adecco Report on Employability and Languages . Specifically, according to this report, English is the most in-demand language, with a presence of 90% of the total number of offers that request languages in Spain.
Furthermore, the study carried out by rcs data spain and Adecco shows that the demand for language skills increases proportionally to the professional category. Thus, 51.7% of job offers for management positions require languages , while for employees this figure is only 22%. English is the most required language for any professional category, although its high demand is striking in the case of managers (95%) and middle managers (91.1%).
But, at this point, do the demands meet reality? According to the study “ English at work: a global analysis of English skills in the world of work ”, carried out by the University of Cambridge and the consultancy QS Intelligence Unit, in Spain, 75% of managers have the necessary English skills to do their job ; compared to 95% in France, Belgium and Switzerland. On a global level –the research analyses data from more than 5,000 workers from different sectors in 38 countries– the study concludes that executives perceive that 22% of their managers do not have the necessary English skills to meet the expectations of their job. Despite this deficit, only 4% of them are considering improving their level of English.
The study also analyses the knowledge and use of English based on the size of the companies, their sector of activity and the territory in which they operate, as well as the most in-demand requirements in each area. It concludes that more than 70% of companies with between 100 and 499 employees in the technology area require a high level of English knowledge from their management and marketing positions; 46% of these companies require a high or native level of knowledge to make presentations. For employees of this type of company, the most necessary skills are reading and speaking English, at 38% and 35%, respectively.
