Bitkom President Achim Berg explains the current situation regarding school closures and the challenges of digital teaching :
"Never before have Germany's education politicians caused such great disappointment and alienation - among students, parents and teachers, but also in business and society. Their proposals are too unambitious and too old-fashioned, their decisions are too erratic, their communication is too chaotic. Everyone understood that at the beginning of the Corona crisis, things had to be done on a netherland gambling data case-by-case basis. Now, almost a year after the first restrictions, we can expect vision, strategy and future-oriented, decisive action. Against this background, Bitkom is calling for a legal right to digital lessons for students of all types of schools - now during the Corona crisis, but also beyond, in order to be able to include students in lessons, for example, who cannot always visit the school buildings due to illness or personal restrictions.
Many schools are still unable to offer their students a functional digital education program. Instead of getting learning platforms up and running, many federal states are concentrating on returning to face-to-face teaching as quickly as possible. This is irresponsible in view of the infection situation and continues the pedagogical standards of the past century. As long as schools cannot be reopened on a broad scale, every student must be able to be taught digitally. Providing functional learning platforms is not rocket science. The affected federal states must now provide sufficient server capacity and IT support at short notice so that the platforms can also be used by all students and teachers. Schools, students and teachers who do not yet have access to the platforms must receive them quickly and unbureaucratically from the responsible authorities in the states. Many schools, teachers and students have already successfully proven that digital learning is possible - without overloaded servers and with digital know-how."
