Digital industry consistently rates business climate better than the economy as a whole

In a long-term comparison with the ifo business climate for the German economy as a whole, the Bitkom-ifo digital index consistently reaches a significantly higher level. Companies in the ICT sector consistently rate their respective situation better than the economy as a whole. The basic development of the ifo business climate and the Bitkom-ifo digital index is mostly similar.

Since 2006, the Bitkom -ifo Digital Index and the ifo Business Climate have canada gambling data developed in the same direction in two out of three monthly measurements (65 percent). In May 2019, however, the ifo Business Climate fell by 2.9 to 14.1 points, thus developing in the opposite direction to the Bitkom-ifo Digital Index. The background to this is that most sectors are under significantly greater pressure from general economic risks than the ICT sector.



Note on methodology: The digital index is based on the monthly ifo economic survey and is calculated from the geometric mean of the business situation index and the business expectations index. Data from the digital sector, which is made up of companies in the manufacturing, trade and services sectors, is taken into account.

These include manufacturers of IT and communications technology, consumer electronics, providers of software and IT services, telecommunications services, and wholesale and retail ICT. The index is presented as a balance. It is weighted according to the number of employees.
