Some gamers don't feel motivated to install antivirus software on their devices. Every now and then, you'll see complaints about lag in gaming chats, and someone will always come up with the usual pearl of wisdom: turn off your antivirus .
In fact, this advice is a terrible idea. There are many malicious programs that are targeting Steam accounts – not to mention that it is very easy to download something nasty on an unprotected device. If your computer gets infected, then lag will definitely start, not to mention other problems. And then, are you sure you won’t forget to reactivate your antivirus when you’re done playing?
Modern antivirus software can operate without being noticed. For example, Kaspersky Internet Security considers Steam to be a trusted application and, by default, does not interfere with its activity.
If you are encountering issues while playing the game, follow the tips below. The same tricks can be used by users of Kaspersky Total Security or Kaspersky Security Cloud .
Adjust network rules for Steam in Kaspersky Internet Security
First, check that your antivirus program is not blocking the gaming service from connecting to the Internet:
Open Kaspersky Internet Security and click the gear icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
From the menu on the left, select Protection and then Firewall .
At the bottom of the screen, click Configure App Rules .

Locate Steam in the list of applications and check for a green checkmark next to the Network column . If you see a different checkmark, click it and select Allow.
Do the same for all Valve services .
You will have no problem participating in online battles from now on.
Configuring rules and exceptions for Steam in Kaspersky Internet Security
Certain Steam features require rights that the protection solution may consider unsafe to grant. For example, to access the Steam Community Dashboard and all associated features, the Steam client needs access to the game process. To grant the application the necessary rights, do the following:
Open Kaspersky Internet Security and click the gear icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
Select Protection from the left menu and click Application Control .
At the bottom of the screen, select Manage Applications .

Right-click the application name and select Rules & Details from the menu.
In the next window, open the tabs one by one, granting Steam the necessary permissions, for example, the ability to interfere with other processes.
On the Exceptions tab , uncheck the Do not actively monitor the application option .

How to improve your computer's performance while gaming
To keep your computer running fast while you play the latest version of Assassin's Creed , make sure that Game Mode is enabled in Kaspersky Internet Security. Now, the application won't bother you with updates or routine system checks while the game is running in full-screen mode.
Game Mode is on by default, but if it's running slow or you're getting pop-up notifications from antivirus while you're playing, it's worth checking to make sure.
Open Kaspersky Internet Security and click the gear icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
In the menu on the left, select Performance and make sure that Use Game Mode is checked . If it is, you're good to go. If it isn't, select that option.
Another reason we don’t recommend disabling Kaspersky Internet Security is that if you do so on Windows 10, the built-in Windows Defender will automatically kick in. Defender doesn’t have a dedicated game mode, so you’re much more likely to experience lag if it’s active.
