The definition of subliminal advertising refers to the introduction of images in a video sequence in such a way that, as they appear so briefly, our eye is not able to see them and, therefore, we are not aware of having perceived them, but our brain does assimilate them subconsciously. That is, the images appear so briefly that they are below the threshold of human consciousness; they cannot be seen but are retained by the brain.
This phenomenon was tested by trying to influence the will of individuals during the performance of a certain activity without them being aware of it and inviting them to consume a certain product, feel some type of ghana phone number list or incite some need. The result of the experiment was not entirely conclusive. Even so, there is some debate around subliminal messages, as they are understood as a way of influencing someone's preferences by manipulating their mind.
Due to the debate that arose about the morality of this type of advertising, Spain banned it. The General Advertising Law of 1988 indicates that subliminal advertising is a type of illicit advertising and defines it as “… that which, by being emitted with stimuli at the threshold of sensitivity, is not consciously perceived.”
Many companies use these subliminal techniques to reach the user and influence their purchasing behavior. Some people describe this method as unorthodox because it provokes stimuli in the person unconsciously and involuntarily. Although there are studies that support the thesis that subliminal advertising itself does not work, at least on a massive scale. In reality, what companies or brands are interested in is that consumers have a perfectly conscious perception of their advertising messages so that the memory of the product is greater.
Subliminal advertising is also used to promote certain products or services that cannot be openly advertised for legal reasons. One of the examples of subliminal advertising of this type is found in the case of Marlboro in Formula One. It uses the image of a bar code that subliminally transmits the brand logo.
On the other hand, it should be noted that sometimes it is not well identified when we are facing a case of subliminal advertising, but there are sectors of the population that are delighted with the subject. There are many people who are passionate about finding subliminal messages in advertising images, so some companies decide to please this curious sector of the population and launch subliminal images in their advertising to somehow connect with the client. This can also benefit brands due to the virality that subliminal ads can achieve on social networks and this leads to obtaining a great impact and visibility.
