What are long tail keywords?

Post by bitheerani319 »

Long tail keywords (LKT) are specific keywords that have the SEO function of attracting a very specific audience with a higher probability of conversion.
The term “long tail” comes from a rather friendly comparison of keywords with the figure of a dinosaur in a graph:

What this comparison aims to explain is that the more colombia phone number list a term is, the fewer searches it will have. But, at the same time, these searches are of higher quality and vice versa.

How do long tail keywords work?
For example, imagine that you own an eco-friendly pet store, so you sell organic products and kibble. Intuitively, you could determine that your main keywords are:

Pet food
Pet store
Pets
But unfortunately, these keywords are too general. If you try to rank for them by creating content, you will most likely not be able to compete against the big companies that already have those terms in your area, or you will attract an audience that is looking for very different things, such as buying a pet or even a veterinary clinic.
In order to reach your target audience, which is local and has a much more specific profile, you would have to resort to long-tail terms such as:

Organic pet food in (your neighborhood or delivery area)
Eco-friendly pet products delivered to your home
Eco-friendly pet store in (your neighborhood or delivery area)
Obviously, the number of people searching for those keywords is substantially lower than the number of users searching for “pet food” or “pets” across the web, but they are much more likely to be visitors who actually fit your buyer persona profile and have the interest or need to purchase what you offer.
