Main types of merch
Most often, there are two types of merch:
Official merch – the release of goods is carried out by the owner of the trademark or with his permission. In most cases, such products are not cheap, but are of high quality.
Often, a limited number of copies enter the market, which causes demand to increase and the price to jump sharply. In particular, a small batch of collectible items can be sold out literally immediately after appearing on the market, no matter how huge the price.
Unofficial merch – this refers to manufacturers with a dubious reputation who use the names of famous brands for their products. Such goods are sold at a low price and, as a rule, are of poor quality. It is clear that for true connoisseurs these things are of little interest.
There are currently many options for presenting merch. The most popular are original souvenirs and items with symbols that have practical value.
Other options for dividing merch into types
Fan. This is probably the earliest form of merch. The first to set an example were soldiers who would put the name of their city and unit number on their clothes. Elvis Presley began to make money from merch when he released T-shirts with his image in 1956.
Event-related. Timed to coincide with a specific event: an exhibition, festival, concert, championship.
Corporate. This is similar to distributing souvenirs, but here the costs are reimbursed. Similar promotions are held by Alfa-Bank, Beeline, KFC and others.
Social. Used to popularize an idea. These merch items are created and distributed by state or charitable foundations. In fact, they encourage a certain action: wearing seat belts while driving, getting vaccinated against Covid-19, being kind to nature, and so on.
A special category includes hybrid merch (there is another name - collaboration). This includes a clothing collection from Yandex.Taxi and designer Harry Nuriev, thanks to which their mutual PR was successfully carried out.
