I’ve talked and written a lot about the concept of Entity-First Indexing as opposed to the more well-known Mobile-First Indexing, because I think Google’s move to mobile-first indexing was geared toward organizing information around the Knowledge Graph. You can see how websites (the “Seen on the web” results) are being included in Maps (part of the Knowledge Graph) instead of the other way around.
SEO professionals should pay attention to web content from the perspective of the “Topic Layer” that categorizes it in terms of the Knowledge Graph. It seems that sometimes certain pieces of information get enough engagement from web content to move them to the “Topic Layer.” It may be partially influenced by the “Related Topics” in the Knowledge Graph, as well as the popular “Other Questions from the User.”
Google has recently doubled its efforts in media optimization, because they have highly engaging content that can be accessed through traditional search or voice search. This means that brands should:
Create and optimize videos and live broadcasts, ideally hosted on YouTube.
ML feed.
Use good images with descriptive alt text.
Launch native apps, web apps, or PWAs – indexed with the new Google Indexing API and hosted on Firebase.
Optimize Google My Business with insights and media.
We tend to describe the pieces of information that are pulled from the Edge Layer to the Topic Layer as “Fraggles.” This word is a combination of “Fragment” and “Handle” because often when these assets are highlighted in a search, Google will open the page and scroll directly to the content, as if there were an HTML handle or direct links. Sometimes they are present, and sometimes Google seems to know where to scroll on its own. What’s important is that a page can rank, but within the position there can be a vertical or horizontal carousel of additional pieces of information on the same page. This makes the listing take up more space and has greater authority, generating more clicks, and when people find exactly what they want, it leads to more engagement and happy customers. “Fraggles” are a new thing, bu email database list t in our unscientific research, there seems to be a tendency for them to appear in the following cases:
Add anchor texts, especially for content with H2/H3.
Star ratings/ratings for answers.
Marking questions and answers and rating stars for “Best Answer”.
