Vanity metrics, such as impressions or visits, are often misleading because they don't give you the information you need to grow your business's revenue.

Techcrunch.com has this to say about vanity metrics:

"The number of registered users, downloads, views do not russia phone number data matter at all, because these indicators are very easy to manipulate. The really important indicators are the number of active users, the level of engagement, the cost of acquiring new customers, and ultimately revenue and profit."

For a comprehensive discussion of vanity metrics, check out Eric Ries' book The Lean Startup.

Rees suggested using the following feedback loop in startup marketing:

metrics

Evaluate - study customer reactions, Explore - should strategy be changed, Create - from idea to product

But if you use the wrong metrics, the feedback loop won't lead you to success.

The only metrics that really matter are those that you put effort into achieving. Unfortunately, data from off-the-shelf analytics packages is often “ vanity metrics ” — they may make you happy, but they certainly won’t give you any clue as to what to do next.

Ask yourself: are you making decisions based on the right data? If not, you’re probably not going to have a chance of converting leads into customers.
