Each year, the Scholars at Risk (SAR) network of academic institutions recognizes scholars from around the world who demonstrate exemplary commitment to protecting and promoting academic freedom. And in 2024, Ukrainian scholars became laureates of the Courage to Think award, recognized for their courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to their work despite the war. The distinction was accepted by the entire Ukrainian academic community by Mariupol State University (MSU), as a displaced but unconquered educational institution.

The Courage to Think Award is presented by SAR to individuals, groups, or institutions that have demonstrated exemplary dedication to protecting scholars and supporting academic freedom. This may be expressed through their professional activities, private efforts, or public service, often in the face of personal risk.

Awarding of Ukrainian scientists

In 2024, Scholars at Risk (SAR) announced in New York that Ukrainian scientists had been awarded the Courage to Think Award. The award ceremony took place on June 26 at the SAR World Congress in Vilnius. The award was received cayman islands phone numbers by Associate Professor of the Marketing and Tourism Department Kateryna Goryunova, who is currently in Lithuania and coordinates the Mariupol State University Center based at Vytautas the Great University.

In her speech, the associate professor emphasized that the Courage to Think award is a recognition of the resilience of scientists who continue their work every day despite the challenges. She expressed gratitude for the support on behalf of all Ukrainians and emphasized that unity and solidarity are the forces that allow the scientific community to act.

Announcing the award, SAR Executive Director Robert Quinn said: “The courage and dedication of Ukrainian scientists is exceptional and inspiring. They continue to work despite a prolonged and brutal assault, including repeated bombing, occupation and mass displacement. The solidarity and creativity of scientists in supporting each other, their students and their institutions is admirable. They risk their careers and sometimes their lives, recognising that the future of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people depends in large part on research and teaching that rebuilds and inspires young Ukrainians, and protects Ukrainian nationality and culture from attempts to destroy it.”

In the current reality, it is especially important for Ukrainian scientists, as well as for Ukraine as a whole, to receive such awards. The "Courage to Think" award has become not only a recognition of the resilience of Ukrainian scientists, but also a symbol of their courage and dedication to their work, even in the most difficult conditions.
