We know that digital technology is not just a technology. It also and above all corresponds to transformations in our societies and cultures, new "arts of doing" and new ways of living. It offers opportunities for the personal development of each individual and that of the world around us. It also brings individual and social threats to employment, respect for privacy and democracy.

In France, public discourse on digital technology in education reflects these risks. In the last few months leading up to the coronavirus pandemic, there was much talk of the risks of screen addiction and their corollary in terms of sleep debt, impaired attention and exposure to violence. The lockdown period and the one that followed it have shifted the focus to what has been agreed to be called digital divides. This is often a discourse of caution and sometimes of fear.
